Preparing for Adulthood

Preparing for adulthood is an important part of life at Priestley Smith.

For young people with vision impairment, successful transition into adulthood may involve developing skills and confidence across many areas of life.

​

Careers education therefore connects with wider Preparation for Adulthood rather than focusing only on choosing a job.

Employment and my future

Pupils may develop career awareness, employability skills, workplace experience, understanding of different employment routes, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, applications and interview skills, self-advocacy and understanding of workplace accessibility.

Independence

Depending upon individual needs, preparation may include developing organisation, decision-making, independent living skills, confidence, problem-solving, using technology, mobility, travel skills and asking for appropriate support.

Self-advocacy and vision impairment

We want pupils to develop the confidence to understand and communicate their own needs. This can include understanding my vision impairment; explaining how I access information; knowing what helps me; asking for reasonable adjustments; understanding assistive technology; communicating with employers/providers; and developing confidence in unfamiliar environments.

Assistive technology

Technology can play an important role in education, employment and independent adulthood. Where appropriate, pupils develop their ability to use technology effectively and understand how assistive technology can support access to learning and work.

Mobility and travel

Being able to access education, training, employment and community opportunities is an important part of preparing for adulthood. Where appropriate to individual needs, pupils develop mobility, orientation and travel skills which support greater independence.

CFVI

Our approach is informed by the Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI). Preparation for Adulthood is a key part of this work.
