Learning directly from employers and experiencing workplaces are important parts of our careers programme.

Pupils need opportunities not only to hear about jobs, but to understand what workplaces are actually like.

Employer Encounters

Pupils have opportunities to meet employers and employees; learn about different occupations; ask questions; understand the skills employers value; explore different employment sectors; hear about different routes into employment; meet role models; and challenge assumptions about what people with vision impairment can achieve.

Experiences of Workplaces - Before

Pupils are supported to understand where they are going; learn about the organisation; understand what people do there; consider what they want to find out; identify skills they would like to develop; prepare questions; understand expected workplace behaviour; consider travel/orientation needs; and identify accessibility requirements.
 

Experiences of Workplaces - During

Pupils have opportunities to experience a workplace environment; meet employees; understand different roles; observe workplace routines; develop communication; develop confidence; practise employability skills; ask questions; and learn how accessibility and reasonable adjustments operate in workplaces.

Pupils are supported to reflect:

Vision impairment in the workplace

As pupils prepare for employment, careers learning may include understanding reasonable adjustments, assistive technology, communicating access needs, self-advocacy, mobility and orientation, travelling to work, accessible recruitment, workplace support and Access to Work.

We welcome employers who can help young people understand the world of work and develop ambitious and informed aspirations.
 

Employers can support us by hosting workplace visits; offering workplace experiences; giving careers talks; joining Future Fridays; providing role models; running employability workshops; supporting mock interviews; explaining recruitment processes; sharing industry knowledge; and demonstrating inclusive and accessible employment practices.
