Parents & Carers

Supporting Your Young Person's Future

Parents and carers have an important role in supporting young people to explore their aspirations and make decisions about their future.

We want families to have access to clear, impartial information and opportunities to participate in careers and transition planning.

What will my young person receive?

Link directly to Our Careers Programme and explain that provision includes careers learning, employers, providers, workplace experiences, personal guidance and transition planning.

How can I support them?

Encourage parents and carers to:

  • discuss interests and strengths;

  • talk positively about different possibilities;

  • explore different pathways rather than assuming one route;

  • attend careers/transition discussions;

  • explore colleges and providers;

  • use LMI;

  • encourage independence;

  • discuss workplace experiences;

  • help their young person reflect after careers activities; and

  • support them to develop self-advocacy.

Understanding post-school options

Provide direct links to the school's own explanations of Further Education, Specialist Colleges, Supported Internships, Apprenticeships, Higher Education, Employment and Volunteering.

Vision impairment and employment

Provide accessible information on reasonable adjustments, Access to Work, assistive technology, workplace accessibility, travel and mobility, and relevant support organisations.

Personal careers guidance

Explain who Dave Hooley is, when meetings occur once confirmed, and how parents can participate or request support.
