Introduction

Our careers programme is designed to help pupils progressively develop their understanding of themselves, their future possibilities and the world of work.
 

Careers education begins before pupils are required to make important decisions about qualifications and future pathways and continues as they prepare to leave Priestley Smith.

Our programme combines:
 

• curriculum learning;

• Personal Development;

• Preparation for Adulthood;

• careers and labour market learning;

• employer and employee encounters;

• education and training provider encounters;

• workplace experiences;

• visits;

• careers events;

• Future Fridays;

• alumni and role models;

• volunteering and community experiences;

• personal careers guidance; and

• transition planning.

Stage 1 - Discover: Who am I?

Pupils begin by developing awareness of their interests, strengths, things they enjoy, different roles people have, the concept of work, different workplaces, their community, independence, communication, teamwork and their aspirations for adult life.

​

The emphasis is not simply on choosing a job. Pupils develop the foundations they need to understand themselves and participate in decisions about their future.

Stage 2 - Explore: What possibilities are available to me?

As pupils progress, they explore different careers and occupations, employability and workplace skills, ambition and aspirations, realistic career goals, Labour Market Information, jobs available in Birmingham and the West Midlands, skills employers need, salaries and job opportunities, entrepreneurship, volunteering, different education and training routes, and the connection between school learning and adult life.

Stage 3 - Experience: What is the world of work really like?

Pupils have opportunities to move beyond classroom learning by meeting employers and employees; meeting people with different occupations; meeting alumni and role models; participating in careers days; participating in Blind in Business workshops; taking part in Future Fridays; visiting employers and providers; participating in community activities; experiencing workplaces; and reflecting on what they have learned.

Stage 4 - Decide: What might my next step be?

As pupils approach transition points, they are supported to understand the options available; explore different providers; consider their strengths and aspirations; understand qualification and training routes; receive impartial careers guidance; visit possible destinations; discuss their future with families and professionals; and make informed decisions about their next step.

Stage 5 - Prepare and Progress

As pupils approach leaving Priestley Smith, careers education increasingly focuses on preparing successfully for their destination.

​

Depending upon individual pathways this may include further education, specialist college, supported internship, apprenticeship, training, higher education, employment, supported employment, volunteering, or other appropriate Preparation for Adulthood outcomes.

​

Pupils are supported to develop the practical skills, confidence, independence and self-advocacy they will need for their next step.
