Personal Careers Guidance
Introduction
Careers guidance provides pupils with an opportunity to talk individually about their future with an impartial careers adviser.

The purpose is not to tell a pupil what they should do. It is to help them understand their strengths, explore possibilities, ask questions and make informed decisions.

Our Independent Careers Adviser
Dave Hooley provides impartial careers guidance to pupils at Priestley Smith.

What happens in a careers guidance meeting?
The discussion may include:
-
what the pupil enjoys;
-
strengths and skills;
-
subjects and qualifications;
-
aspirations;
-
careers of interest;
-
education and training options;
-
further and specialist education;
-
supported internships;
-
apprenticeships;
-
employment;
-
possible barriers;
-
accessibility and support;
-
next steps; and
-
actions that will help the pupil move forward.

When do pupils receive guidance?
The school's supplied careers document explicitly records careers interviews in Year 10 and Year 12. Confirm whether the school's wider entitlement includes additional meetings from Year 8 onwards before publishing the final wording.

Published wording once confirmed: [INSERT CONFIRMED ENTITLEMENT].

What happens afterwards?
Where appropriate, pupils should have a record of what was discussed, ideas/options explored, agreed next steps, actions and any further support required.

Can parents and carers be involved?
Parents and carers are encouraged to be involved in careers and transition discussions where appropriate.
